Coursera

Confidence: High

| Compare | NPTEL | Coursera |
|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Worth it | Depends |
| Best for | Indian engineering students | Career switchers chasing certificates |
| Who it's not for | Learners wanting a modern, polished platform | Anyone needing responsive customer support |
| Privacy | Two community-reported issues: an XSS on the portal and claimed student-record exposure; no official confirmation of a breach.⁹ | Researchers disclosed Coursera API vulnerabilities in 2021; the company now runs a HackerOne bug-bounty program. |
| Support quality | Refund and fee-waiver confusion reported by students. | Trustpilot 'Bad' 1.3/5 rating |
| Public sentiment | Students largely praise the free IIT-taught content but flag exam portal bugs, refund hassles, and uneven certificate credibility. | Praise centers on content breadth and organization; criticism centers on peer grading, confusing pricing, service issues, and softening certificate value.13 |
| Biggest gotcha | Certification costs ~₹1,000 per course; college-mandated NPTEL turns 'free' learning into recurring fees.⁵ | Monthly Plus ($59) costs far more than annual ($399) . pay yearly or finish fast. |
